LIMITS & ODDS / Tips & Tricks

Five missed rolls do not make a six due on a fair, independent die. That small example explains one common error in casino advice. Before applying it to a game, identify the mechanism, rules and assumptions behind the claim.

## Short answer

A probability describes a defined model; return to player (RTP) describes long-run returns. Neither a short sequence nor a personal result guarantees what happens next. Check the assumptions before applying a number.

## A simple independence example

Assume a fair six-sided die, unchanged between independent rolls. The probability of a six on the next roll is 1 ÷ 6, about 16.67%, whether the previous rolls included five sixes or none. The prior sequence does not change the die in this model.

This is an explanation of independence, not a finding about every casino game. A card shoe without replacement, a bingo draw with numbers removed, or a state-dependent bonus feature needs its own model. A results-history graphic cannot tell you which assumptions apply.

## Three numbers that are often confused

**Keep the time horizon and denominator visible**

| Measure | What it describes | What it does not establish |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Theoretical RTP | A game model’s long-run return relative to total stakes. | A refund percentage for one person or session. [\[1\]](https://paldokadito.com/tips/understand-the-odds/#guide-source-ukRTP) 22 Oct 2026 |
| Observed return ratio | Recorded returns divided by recorded wager turnover. | The exact configured RTP from a small sample. [\[2\]](https://paldokadito.com/tips/understand-the-odds/#guide-source-ukMeasuredRTP) 22 Oct 2026 |
| Personal net result | What your complete session records show after deposits, receipts and remaining funds. | A prediction for the next game. |

The UK Gambling Commission explains RTP as a long-run measure and distinguishes random-machine behaviour from other designs. We use that mathematical explanation here; a UK machine rule is not a Philippine operator authorization. [\[1\]](https://paldokadito.com/tips/understand-the-odds/#guide-source-ukRTP) 22 Oct 2026

## Worked example: 74% is an observation

Suppose fictional records show ₱1,000 in total stakes and ₱740 in returned game awards. The observed ratio is ₱740 ÷ ₱1,000 × 100 = 74%. It is not calculated from deposits alone. Returned awards can be staked again, which increases turnover.

The ratio describes those records. On its own it neither verifies a published model nor establishes that a game is faulty. Sample size and variability matter. It also creates no obligation for the next spin to make up the difference. The regulator’s calculation guide explains why observed and designed returns can differ.

## Questions to ask of an odds claim

- Which exact game, variant and configuration does the number describe?
- Is it a probability, a payout multiple, a long-run return or a measured sample?
- Does the stated payout include the original stake?
- Are feature fees, side bets or game-state conditions included?
- Does the claim promise recovery or profit that its evidence cannot support?

## Frequently asked questions

### Does RTP use my deposit as its denominator?

The observed calculation uses total wager turnover. Repeated stakes can make turnover larger than deposits.

### Does a losing session prove the published RTP is wrong?

Not by itself. You need the configuration, complete records and an appropriate statistical assessment; a short sample can vary.

### Are all casino rounds independent?

No assumption should be made across every game. Cards without replacement, bingo draws and state-dependent features need their own models.

### Can a payout multiple tell me the chance of winning?

No. A payout and the probability of qualifying for it are different quantities. You need both to evaluate a return claim.
